captioned by the national captioning institute --www.ncicap.org-- ♪ >> live, local, late-breaking. this is wbal tv 11 news at 6:00. >> it has been nearly 48 hours since the intense thunderstorms slammed the area and left the state looking like we had just seen the hurricane. hundreds of thousands still without power. no air-conditioning as temperatures continue to rise. we have live team coverage tonight. john collins is standing by with the local forecast.

first, to the power. crews worked to get things back up and running. they have a lot of work on their hands. trees down and power poles down. here is the latest for you. nearly 280,000 customers still in the dark. more than 300,000 customers have restored power. lots of outages in delaware, maryland, and virginia. for some people, it could be a long wait. >> this restoration effort is going to go deep. there will be customers who are out of power today and will not have their power until later this week. we can work hard but it is still

a manual process of cleaning up and restoring power. >> governor 0 mileage -- the o'malley says he understands that a hurricane -- but o'malley says the utility companies need to restore power until friday. businesses had to shut down because they do not have power. >> it only adds insult to injury if you try to leave your home to get eyes or something to eat only to find out that the store you went to was closed because they did not have power. a supermarket in roland park. we have seen dozens of people get turned away from all of these businesses. the atm at the bank does not work.

a sign tells people to go elsewhere. starbucks also does not have power. the grocery store had to turn away the most customer. s. the store manager says he cannot begin to estimate how many -- how much money they are losing because of the outage. >> cannot do business. we have no registers and we have no power. >> ice is the hardest thing to come by right now. we have talking to people who are looking for highs. they are having a hard time finding it. the city was distributing highs earlier, but they ran out at 4:00 this afternoon. we are live in maryland park. wbal-tv 11 news. >> a live look from our

downtowns skycam. john collins is standing by with the latest. >> the heat is making a worse situation out of a bad situation. the closest store to us is in philadelphia right now. a strong isolate the storm. something isolated could crop up with a storm near philadelphia. there is some storm activity are around the region up toward new york, new eland and back toward ohio and north carolina. -- new england and back toward ohio and north carolina. we will talk about the forecast for the week ahead coming up. >> since the heat is sticking around, emergency cooling centers will stay open for the rest of the week.

they will be open from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. if you are concerned about a neighbor, please check in on them. you should call 311 if you are concerned. if it is an emergency, call 911. we also got word this afternoon that 42 baltimore county schools are without power so they will be closed tomorrow. summer school has started yet. officials say staff at the close schools will be contacted about where and when to return to work. it is not just maryland cleaning up after the storm. in d.c., hundreds of thousands are without power and debris is covering the streets. in new jersey, people were taken by surprise with the speed and power of the storm. >> my husband was outside in the lightning holding our tent

>> detectives are investigating an early morning shooting involving a baltimore police officers. -- police officer. a male suspect was assaulting a woman in a car. the officer caught up with the suspect and they started to struggle. the officer fired one shot killing the suspect. >> domestic situations are one of the things police prepare for because you are dealing with increased demotion and anger and sometimes rage. >> officials say the police officer was taken to area hospitals with non-life

threatening injuries. another shooting is being investigated in baltimore. a victim flat to down police after being shot in the arm. -- flagged down police after being shot in the arm. the date is july 1, cleaning -- meaning many laws go into effect. a measure approved a septic tank this is also on the books. local jurisdictions will be required to cut fees to prevent storm runoff. the storms of affected people in so many ways. some were stranded for more than 20 hours. the details straight ahead.

>> what started out as a routine train trip from new york to chicago turned into a long ordeal for more than 200 amtrak passengers when the violent storms left them stranded in west virginia. they left friday and finally arrived today on the bus. downed trees left them stranded at the strain -- train station for 20 hours. >> they would tell us one thing and then they would tell us another thing and then they would tell us something else. >> amtrak says storm damage will continue to cause delays between baltimore and washington d.c. >> now your insta-weather forecast with meteorologist john collins. >> it was truly a big storm and it happened so fast. we are still under the gun as far as the potential for severe weather of with the next few days.

-- over the next few days. in baltimore, we have heat and humidity. and isolated storms in philadelphia north of wilmington. a few storm clouds moving into ohio. these are not on the scale of the storms from friday night. there is the potential for severe weather. temperatures cooled from the 90's to the 80's. they made it to 97 at the airport and 101 at the harbor. the record was 103 that in 1901. we did not break the record, but it made everybody feel like it was in the 100's. statewide, the temperatures are still in the 90's. even near the bay, it is warm. it is only 81 in oakland.

satellites radar combination. you see the storm clusters, a few storms in connecticut and rhode island and the coastal areas of massachusetts and in the carolinas. that is moving along this front that was south of us last night. now it is that north again. this big area of high pressure is still sitting there. storm activity will be along the north edge of this thing. the front is expected to slip a little soft can be noise until the fourth of july. the sunshine will be somewhere -- the storm will be somewhere in the mid-atlantic region. most of the nation is a steam bath except the pacific northwest. warm and humid tonight.

68-75. winds almost nonexistent. hot and humid again tomorrow. perhaps an isolated storms cropping up. maybe not quite as high as today. if the humidity will make it feel like close to 100 pripet -- close to 100. . we take a look at the futurecast and there is a chance for isolated activity. we go into tuesday and we see mostly activity out in the mountains of the west. minimal rain chances in the area. there will be a front to the north of us with activity along the front. we will have to see how far north that calms. for the july 4, temperatures will be in the 80's.
